Spiders and Tweezers

1

Here’s one of the Halloween themed activities I set up for the children this week.

5

The idea is that the children use the tongs to collect the spiders in the buckets.

This supports the children’s development by helping to strengthen fingers muscles ready for writing and other small motor tasks.

I had two keen spider hunters who worked hard to collect all the spiders!

 E struggled a bit with the tweezers…

..and opted to just use her hands!

Exploring her current fascination with tipping various objects back and forth between containers!

But then shock, horror!  The children made a frightening discovery!

 All the spiders had escaped!!
Obviously they hadn’t really.  I had extended the activity by hiding the spiders around the lounge for the children to find.  The idea being that those little fingers would get a really good work-out keeping the tweezers squeezed shut as they carried the spiders from the lounge back to the basket.

This activity generated lots of shrieks of excitement and lots of racing around as they located the spiders and carried them back.

Apologies for all the blurry photos they were just too fast!

All safely back!
I think I will extend this further tomorrow by incorporating numbers into play.
The best thing about this activity though was that it was really cheap to do.  There are plenty of plastic spiders in the shops at the moment, I think I paid £1 for a pack.  The tealights, (not entirely essential, but covers EYFS technology into the activity for younger children) were also £1 and the tweezers are actually teabag squeezers,
