The Hungry Caterpillar is always a favourite story here, so I decided to make some props to accompany storytelling. I got the idea from here.
I printed out and laminated images of all the food items in the story, used a cardboard tube to create the caterpillar, an old sack from the re-cycling centre to make a cocoon and made a butterfly by painting a piece of leather with acrylic paints.
The idea was that the children would identify and post the food into the caterpillars mouth as I read the story…..
…the caterpillar would then go into the bag cocoon…..
….and the butterfly, which fits just inside the top of the caterpillar would be pulled out of the cocoon.
Well they were all keen an eager at story time!
Luckily J was with us and she helped to demonstrate to the younger children what they needed to do.
They soon got the hang of it and joined in looking for the correct food items.
Posting the food into the caterpillar’s mouth was their favourite part!
Though it was quite fiddly and took a lot of concentration.
J then helped the caterpillar into his cocoon….
…and pulled out the caterpillar!
Everyone was keen to hold the butterfly!
They requested that I read the story again, so I guess the props were a hit!
