Child Activity – Sunflowers and Seeds

1
We’ve been busy recently investigating some of the sunflowers and vegetables that have been growing in the garden.

2
I provided giant tweezers and pots, along with the sunflower heads and beans.

3
I showed the children how to break open the pods and they set to work retrieving the beans.  This proved so popular we had to hunt out more beans in the garden!

5

As the children explored we named the parts of the plants (leaf, pod, stem etc) and explored and compared the inside of the pods(we now understand the song line ‘broad beans are sleeping in a blankety bed’!)

Retrieving the sunflower seeds with the tweezers proved a little tricky, but we found it much easier with our fingers!

Hard at work!
10

Removing sunflower seeds one-by-one!
We found it easier if we broke the sunflower head into pieces.
11

We were surprised by the soft feel of the sunflower head where the seeds were.

12

We collected lots of seeds. Not sure what we will use them for yet, but they will definitely come in useful for something!

13

Not surprisingly, we talked about seeds and growing, but the children weren’t overly keen on waiting until next year.

14

So despite being the wrong time of year, we are trying to grow some in plastic cups.
