Beach Theme – Sand Playdough

1 (1)

 Sand playdough!
This was another activity we tried for the first time this year to tie in with our beach theme.
We added some of the resources we had collected from a recent trip to the beach, these included, pebbles, shells and wood.

Here’s the sand dough recipe I used:
4 cups sand
3 cups flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup oil
Just put all the ingredients into a bowl and knead!

Initially the children explored by combining the resources pretty much as I had planned.

Adding stones

sticks

and sand!

6.7

Exploring the feel of the dough.

However, our normal playdough resources are always available to the children and these gradually became incorporated into play.

It started when we needed the rolling pins to flatten the dough.

But before long they were pounding,

stamping.

and cutting the dough.

46.1

Tracing round the circle imprinted in the dough with her finger.

46.2

Combing the resources, using the mallet to pound the stones into the dough.

The children had spent most of the week enjoying their explorations, but later in the week we accidentally made a discovery about our sand dough.  We found we could add more water to it without it ruining.  Brilliant, the children love adding water to things!

It took a while to master the the trigger spray….

..but she managed it!

Every time the playdough dried out in the sun we just added more water!  It didn’t matter if we added too much because it soon dried out again!
We will definitely be doing this one again 🙂
