Autumn Collage

1
The children were busy last week creating some fantastic Autumn collages. I’ve been looking at lots of Autumn ideas on the internet, but wanted something that would not end up being too adult-directed, but would also accommodate the interest in hand / arm painting that became apparent a couple of weeks ago!

2

I provided the children with shallow plates of paint and encouraged them to add the paint to their card using their hands.

3

Some were cautious at first, opting for just finger dipping!

4

Others, who had instigated the hand / arm painting, got stuck straight in!

5

Every body joined in with hand painting at a level appropriate to their stage of development.  For baby E, I squeezed paint on the paper and she explored the texture with her hands.

She probably stayed at the activity for less than 5 minutes, but it was important that she still had the opportunity to participate.

The children used a range of techniques to add the paint : Patting

As well as random marks, they created  circles….

….and lines.  I think you can just make them out in the top central area of the picture.

12

They also experimented with drawing circles with their fingers.

K decided to see what patterns he could create by rolling the sticks
(think we might be doing rolling pin painting next week!)

The children created some really effective results, but more often than not, they then proceeded to cover over their marks!  I resisted the urge to stop them as it was more important that they had the opportunity to learn from their experience and explore in their own way, than create something that was pleasing to an adult.

16

Sometimes they got so carried away with their explorations, the it became difficult to see where the card ended and the table started!

17

When it appeared they were tiring of their explorations, I added some of the Autumn resources we had collected on our walk to the table.

18

The children selected what they wanted to use and added it to their card.

19

Some of the children were really interested in this part of the activity, pointing to a space on their card, selecting an Autumn resource and then adding it.

Others preferred to continue the paint exploration, I think their hands became their finished pieces:-)
